Overview

Granada CF in brief

Granada CF were founded on 6 April 1931 as Club Recreativo Granada, with cabinet-maker Julio Lopez Fernandez as first president, and later took their present name. The first shirts had blue and white vertical stripes; after the Civil War, directors unable to find the old colours bought red and white shirts in Madrid, and those colours stayed. The club played at the old Los Carmenes from 1934 and moved in 1995 to the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes, opened on 16 May that year.

Granada made their La Liga debut in 1941-42 and reached the 1959 Copa del Generalisimo final, now the Copa del Rey, losing 4-1 to Barcelona. Eight straight top-flight seasons from 1968-69 brought a best finish of sixth, twice. Unpaid wages sent the club to the fourth tier for the 2002-03 season. A 2009 partnership with Udinese brought in loan players, and back-to-back promotions followed, returning the club to La Liga in 2011 after 35 years. Granada reached the 2020-21 Europa League quarter-finals, won the Segunda Division in 2022-23 and went down in 2024.
