Overview

Leganes in brief

CD Leganes, from the town of Leganes south of Madrid, were officially founded on 23 June 1928 by Felix Perez de la Serna. Activity stopped during the Spanish Civil War and resumed on 4 September 1946. The club play in blue and white and are nicknamed Los Pepineros, the Cucumber Growers. Their home since February 1998 has been the municipal Butarque stadium, officially renamed Estadio Ontime Butarque under a naming-rights deal signed in July 2025 that runs until 2029.

Leganes won a Tercera Division group in 1985-86, reached Segunda Division B in 1987 and won their Segunda B group in 1992-93 to go up to Segunda, then reached La Liga for the first time in 2016. That first top-flight spell lasted four seasons, with a best finish of 13th in 2018-19, and in 2017-18 they reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals after a 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Their first professional title, Segunda Division in 2023-24, was followed by relegation from La Liga in 2025.
