Overview
Utrecht in brief
FC Utrecht were founded on 1 July 1970 through the merger of three city clubs, VV DOS, USV Elinkwijk and Velox. They play at Stadion Galgenwaard in Utrecht, a ground rebuilt in the early 1980s and comprehensively renovated in the early 2000s, and are known to supporters as Utreg or the Domstedelingen, a name drawn from the city's Dom, its cathedral tower. Predecessor club DOS were Dutch champions in 1958.
Utrecht have won the KNVB Cup three times, in 1985, 2003 and 2004. In 2004 they beat Ajax 4-2 to take the Johan Cruyff Shield, the first winners from outside the traditional Big Three since the annual fixture began in 1991. Their best European runs reached the group stages of the 2004-05 UEFA Cup and the 2010-11 Europa League.

The academy has a strong record: 14 of the 18 first-team players who reached the 1982 KNVB Cup final were academy products, among them goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen. Leo van Veen is the club's record league scorer, and Jan Wouters, who played for Utrecht from 1980 to 1986, later returned as head coach. With no major club nearby, Utrecht lack a classic regional rival; Ajax are regarded as the most important opponent, and matches between the two are always highly charged.
