Overview

Estoril in brief

Estoril Praia were founded on 17 May 1939 as Grupo Desportivo Estoril Plage in the seaside resort of Estoril, in the municipality of Cascais west of Lisbon. Their chief promoter was Fausto Cardoso de Figueiredo, the businessman behind the Estoril Casino and the Lisbon-Cascais railway. The yellow and blue colours represent the sun and the Atlantic, the team are nicknamed the Canarinhos, or Canaries, and home matches are played at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota.

Estoril reached the Taca de Portugal final in 1944, losing 8-0 to Benfica, and first played in the top flight in 1944-45. Their seven second-tier titles are a Portuguese record: four in the old Segunda Divisao, in 1942, 1944, 1946 and 1975, and three in the modern second tier, in 2004, 2012 and 2021. The club also won the third-tier southern zone in 2002-03 and finished runner-up in the 2023-24 Taca da Liga.
