Overview

Estrela in brief

Estrela da Amadora are the football club of Amadora, on the north-western edge of Lisbon. The present club was formed in 2020, when the supporter-founded CD Estrela merged with Club Sintra Football, and it carries the name and tricolour identity of the original Clube de Futebol Estrela da Amadora, founded in 1932 and wound up in 2011. Known as the Tricolores, the team play at the Estadio Jose Gomes, which opened in 1957.

The red, white and green colours date from 1951, when the original club adopted them after a visit from representatives of Brazil's Fluminense, who presented it with sets of their kit. That earlier Estrela won the 1990 Taca de Portugal, played in the following season's Cup Winners' Cup, won the second tier in 1992-93 and spent 16 seasons in the top flight, finishing a best seventh in 1997-98 under Fernando Santos. Those honours belong to the original club, which ran into heavy debts in its final years.
