Overview

St. Truiden in brief

Sint-Truiden, known as STVV and nicknamed De Kanaries (the Canaries), are the football club of Sint-Truiden in Belgian Limburg. The club was founded on 23 February 1924 from the merger of local sides FC Union and FC Goldstar, and chose yellow and blue to match the colours of the city. STVV play at Stayen, officially the Daio Wasabi Stayen Stadium, which opened in 1927; the name comes from a dialect word for an old quarter on the town's western side, and the ground is nicknamed the Hel van Stayen for the defeats that leading teams have suffered there.

The club won its third-division series in 1948 and first reached the top flight in 1957. Its high point came under Raymond Goethals, who arrived in 1959 and led STVV to second place in the top division in 1965-66, while Odilon Polleunis won the Golden Shoe as an STVV player in 1968. The club also won the Belgian League Cup in 1999, reached Belgian Cup finals in 1971 and 2003, and won the second division four times between 1987 and 2015. In 2025-26 STVV finished third, their best league placing since 1965-66, and qualified for the Europa League.
