Overview

Antwerp in brief

Founded in 1880, Royal Antwerp are Belgium's oldest professional football club and hold matricule number one with the national football association. The club began as a cricket and athletics club formed by British residents, with football organised from 1887. Known as The Great Old, the red-and-white side have played since 1923 at the Bosuilstadion in Antwerp's Deurne district, a ground opened with a Belgium-England international watched by some 40,000 people.

Antwerp have won five Belgian league titles, four Belgian Cups and the 2023 Belgian Super Cup, as well as two second-tier championships. Their first four titles came in 1929, 1931, 1944 and 1957, and a 66-year wait ended with a league and cup double in 2022-23. The club's best European run reached the 1993 European Cup Winners' Cup final at Wembley, where Francis Severeyns scored in a 3-1 defeat to Parma.
