Overview

Cercle Brugge in brief

Founded on 9 April 1899 as Cercle Sportif Brugeois by former pupils of the Saint Francis Xavier Institute, Cercle Brugge are one of Belgium's oldest clubs and hold matricule number 12. The green-and-black side, known as Groen-Zwart and De Vereniging, play at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges, which they share with Club Brugge. They moved there in 1975, when it was called the Olympia Stadium, after leaving the Edgard De Smedt Stadium.

Cercle have won three Belgian league titles, in 1911, 1927 and 1930, and two Belgian Cups. Their 1927 league and cup double made them the first Bruges club to win both in the same season, and the second cup came in 1985, when they beat Beveren on penalties in the final. During spells outside the top flight the club have also won five second-tier titles and two third-tier titles.
