Overview

Başakşehir in brief

Founded in 1990 as Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor, the sports club of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Basaksehir took their current name in 2014, when the football club became independent of the municipality and settled in the Basaksehir district on the city's European side. Their home since that year has been the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium, named after the celebrated Turkish coach. The orange-and-navy team are nicknamed Boz Baykuslar, the Grey Owls.

The club climbed from the lower divisions, winning third-tier groups in 1992-93 and 1996-97, and reached the Super Lig for the first time in 2007 as second-tier runners-up. After a later relegation, they won the 2013-14 TFF First League title. Their landmark achievement came in 2019-20, when they won the Super Lig, making Basaksehir only the sixth club to be crowned Turkish champions and the first from outside the traditional big clubs since Bursaspor in 2010. They have also been Turkish Cup runners-up three times, in 2011, 2017 and 2023.
