Overview

Gençlerbirliği S.K. in brief

Founded on 14 March 1923 by students at an Ankara high school, Genclerbirligi are a multi-sport club from Ankara best known for football. Their name means Youth Union, and the club have worn red and black since their foundation; they are known as Ankara Ruzgari, the Wind of Ankara. After decades at the Ankara 19 Mayis Stadium, which was demolished in 2018, the club moved to the Eryaman Stadium in 2019.

Before the national league began in 1959, Genclerbirligi won the Turkish Football Championship in 1941 and 1946 and won the regional Ankara Football League a record number of times. They have since lifted the Turkish Cup twice, in 1987 and 2001, finished as runners-up three more times, and won second-tier titles in 1982-83 and 1988-89. Their best Super Lig finish is third, reached in 1965-66 and 2002-03, and the 2003-04 UEFA Cup run took them past Blackburn Rovers, Sporting CP and Parma before defeat by eventual winners Valencia.
