Overview
Rosenborg in brief
Rosenborg, officially Rosenborg Ballklub and often shortened to RBK, are a football club from Trondheim. Twelve young men from the residential district of Rosenborg founded the club on 19 May 1917 as Sportsklubben Odd, a tribute to Odd of Skien, then the most successful team in Norway. The national association would not admit two members with the same name, so the club took the name Rosenborg Ballklub in the late 1920s. The white shirts and black shorts were another nod to Odd. Nicknamed Troillongan, the Troll Children, Rosenborg play at Lerkendal Stadion, about two kilometres south of Trondheim city centre.
Rosenborg have won 26 Norwegian league titles, more than any other club, and 12 Norwegian Football Cups. The first cup came in 1960 and the first league title in 1967. The club then won the league in 13 consecutive seasons from 1992 to 2004, most of them under Nils Arne Eggen, and in 2015 and 2016 became the first Norwegian side to win the double in consecutive seasons. In Europe, Rosenborg reached the Champions League group stage 11 times between 1995 and 2007. They beat Milan at San Siro on the way to the 1996-97 quarter-finals, where Juventus won 3-1 on aggregate, and reached the second group stage in 1999-2000.

Rosenborg's main rivalry is with Molde, a fellow club from central Norway and a regular challenger for the same trophies. Molde's 4-2 win over Rosenborg in the 2013 cup final is one example of the rivalry. The 2006 title race, in which Rosenborg overturned a ten-point midseason lead held by Brann, was another notable contest. Nils Arne Eggen, who played in the first title-winning side and coached the club in several spells between 1971 and 2010, is the central figure in Rosenborg's history. Forward Odd Iversen was the league's top scorer four times, while Harald Sunde, Bent Skammelsrud and Age Hareide, who coached the 2003 double winners, are also closely associated with the club.
