Overview

AEK Athens in brief

AEK were founded on 13 April 1924 in Athens by Greek refugees from Constantinople, among them former athletes of the Pera Sports Club. The name means Athletic Union of Constantinople, hence the nickname Enosi (Union); the yellow and black colours and double-headed eagle recall the Byzantine Empire. From 1930 they played in Nea Filadelfeia at the ground later named the Nikos Goumas Stadium. AEK then used the Athens Olympic Stadium from 2004 until the Agia Sophia Stadium opened on the old site in 2022. It has been called Allwyn Arena since January 2026.

AEK won their first Greek Cup in 1932 and first national title, with a double, in 1939. In 1968-69 they became the first Greek club to reach the European Cup quarter-finals, and in 1976-77 the first to reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Under Dusan Bajevic they won three titles in a row in 1992-94. Relegated for the first time in 2013, they restarted in the third tier, returned to the top flight in 2015 and won the league in 2018, 2023 (with the cup) and 2026. They reached the Conference League quarter-finals in 2025-26.
