Overview

HNK Hajduk Split in brief

Hajduk Split, officially HNK Hajduk Split, are a football club from Split on the Dalmatian coast. Four Split students in Prague came up with the idea for the club, according to tradition at the U Fleku pub, and it was formally founded on 13 February 1911, when the imperial authorities in Zadar approved its registration. Professor Josip Barac suggested the name, after the hajduks, the romanticised outlaws who fought Ottoman rule. The team wear white shirts with blue shorts, which gives them the nickname Bili (the Whites). Since 1979 they have played at the Stadion Poljud in Split, which was built for that year's Mediterranean Games.

Hajduk won nine Yugoslav league titles between 1927 and 1979. One of them was the 1950 championship, won without losing any of its 18 matches. They also won nine Yugoslav Cups, the last in 1991 against that year's European champions Red Star, so Tito's trophy stayed in Split for good. Since Croatian independence they have won six Croatian First Football League titles, the last in 2005, eight Croatian Football Cups, most recently in 2022 and 2023, and five Croatian Super Cups, and they have never been relegated. In Europe they reached three European Cup and Champions League quarter-finals (1976, 1980 and 1995), plus semi-finals of the 1973 Cup Winners' Cup and the 1984 UEFA Cup.
