Overview

Tromso in brief

Tromso IL, in full Tromso Idrettslag, is a football club from Tromso in Northern Norway. The club was founded in September 1920 as Tromso Turnforenings Fotballag, known simply as Turn. It became Tromso Idrettslag in 1930, was briefly renamed Tor in 1931, and took the Tromso Idrettslag name permanently in 1932. The team play in red and white and are popularly known as Gutan, meaning the boys. Their home in the Alfheim district, long known as Alfheim Stadion, was renamed Romssa Arena in March 2023. Romssa Arena means Tromso's arena in Northern Sami, and it is the northernmost stadium to have staged UEFA matches.

Tromso have never won the Norwegian league title but finished runners-up in the top division in 1990 and 2011, with third places in seasons including 1989, 2023 and 2025. They have won the Norwegian Football Cup twice. In 1986, their first top-flight season, they beat league champions Lillestrom 4-1 in the final, and in 1996 they beat Bodo/Glimt 2-1 in the first final between two northern clubs. They lost the 2012 final. Second-tier titles in 2002 and 2020 followed relegations in 2001 and 2019. In Europe they reached the second round of the 1997-98 Cup Winners' Cup, and the group stages of the 2005-06 UEFA Cup and the 2013-14 Europa League.
