Zabiri brace fires Racing Santander past Alaves despite late red card
Racing Santander came from behind to beat Alaves 2-1 in a La Liga Regular Season - 5 fixture at Estadio El Sardinero, ending the visitors' unbeaten run in the process. The result lifted José Alberto López's side, who had struggled for consistency in recent weeks, to a much-needed home win against a team that arrived in second place.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Ville Koski put Alaves ahead in the 18th minute, finishing to give Quique Sánchez Flores's side the lead they had targeted on the road. Racing responded before the break through Mohamed Zabiri, who converted an Iñigo Vicente assist in the 38th minute to make it 1-1 at half-time. Zabiri struck again eight minutes into the second half, turning provider Jorge Salinas's pass into the winning goal at 2-1.
The closing stages brought further drama when André Almeida was sent off in the 89th minute, leaving the home side to see out the remainder of the match with ten men. Despite conceding more shots and enjoying less of the ball share in the second half, Racing held on for a result that eased some of the pressure from their recent run of form.
Mohamed Zabiri scored both of Racing Santander's goals, turning the match around with a first-half equaliser and a second-half winner to finish as the top-rated player on the pitch.
Alaves had more shots on target than Racing Santander, eight to four, despite finishing on the losing side.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Racing Santander 33%, the draw 27%, Alaves 40%. It finished Racing Santander 2–1 Alaves.
Alaves' rating edge outweighs Racing Santander's home ground — Alaves are the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Alaves the lean. The draw at 27% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why Alaves at 40%?
Alaves sit 173 points higher on our strength rating — 1659 to 1832. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge on the road won 40.1% of 13,164 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Racing Santander's column. Across 11,058 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 28–22–50.
Why only 40%?
La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.2%). La Liga homes won 46.7% of 6,122 games vs 44.9% across all 100,077 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 27%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.2%. These teams' recent games average 3.2 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,178. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Racing Santander average 9 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 173 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Racing Santander scored +0.72 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Measured across 2,853 games at this rating gap, hot-finishing sides won 42.1% vs 42.9% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it scores 0 until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
