Archer strike gives Auxerre first win of the season over Nice
Auxerre secured a 1-0 victory over Nice at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps in a Ligue 1 fixture from the Regular Season - 4 round. The only goal arrived in the 74th minute, when Cameron Archer converted an assist from Christ Makosso to break the deadlock in what had been a scoreless first half.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Despite spending long periods without the ball, Auxerre made their spells of possession count, testing the Nice goalkeeper with seven shots on target from just eleven attempts overall. Nice dominated the ball for large stretches but could not turn territory into a breakthrough, and the home side held firm until the final whistle to close out the win.
The result lifted Auxerre to 13th in the table on three points from four matches, while Nice remained down in 18th with only two points to their name, their run of draws continuing without the win they needed.
Christ Makosso set up the decisive goal and finished with the highest rating on the pitch at 7.63, while Cameron Archer's clinical finish in the 74th minute earned him a rating of 7.41.
Nice held 68% of the possession but managed only four shots on target compared with Auxerre's seven, underlining how the home side made their limited chances count.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Auxerre 34%, the draw 29%, Nice 37%. It finished Auxerre 1–0 Nice.
Level sides, Nice's cold finishing due to recover swings it — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Nice's cold finishing due to recover plus Nice's control of the ball give Nice the lean. The draw at 29% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Nice in front?
Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1667 to 1712. Sides this close won 43.1% of 15,973 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.2%). Nice sit -0.47 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Visitors this cold went on to win 32.5% of 1,362 games, vs 29.1% for visitors finishing normally. Nice hold 5 more possession points (51 to 46 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, when the visitors held this control edge the home team's win rate fell to 40.3% across 5,582 games, from 44.0% when styles were level.
Why only 37%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Level sides split the rest: the draw at 29% and Auxerre at 34%.
Why the draw at 29%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,048. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The control factor adds 1.3 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Auxerre come into this after a busy window — 11 arrivals and 9 departures over the summer. Squad turnover reads dramatic but hasn't moved results once the rating is controlled: the busiest windows landed within noise across 5,368 games, rebuilt elevens likewise across 5,446, and even losing the most regular starters showed nothing (5,336). Nice have rebuilt the eleven — fewer of last season's regular starters are still starting.
