Ajax let two-goal lead slip as Heerenveen fight back to draw
Ajax and Heerenveen shared the points in a 2-2 draw in Eredivisie matchday 2 at the Johan Cruijff Arena, with Michel's side twice giving up an advantage against Robin Veldman's visitors.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Ajax made a fast start, going ahead in the seventh minute when Bernt Klaverboer put through his own net. A. Ouazane doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, finishing off an assist from Caio Henrique. Heerenveen responded right on the stroke of half-time, Jacob Trenskow converting a Sam Kersten assist to make it 2-1 at the break.
The second half brought no further goals until deep into the contest, when Maxence Rivera levelled for Heerenveen in the 82nd minute to make it 2-2, a scoreline that held to the final whistle.
Ajax dominated territory and chances, registering 20 shots to Heerenveen's 13 and edging possession 52 to 48 percent, though only four of those efforts were on target compared with eight for the visitors.
A. Ouazane scored Ajax's second goal of the afternoon and finished with the highest rating on the pitch at 8.5.
Despite having fewer shots overall, Heerenveen were far more clinical in the target, putting eight of their 13 attempts on frame compared with Ajax's four from 20.
Ajax and Heerenveen drew 2–2 (half-time 2–1).

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Ajax 57%, the draw 27%, Heerenveen 16%. It finished Ajax 2–2 Heerenveen.
Ajax's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Ajax are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their control of the ball on top gives Ajax a clear lead. The draw at 27% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Ajax at 57%?
Ajax sit 108 points higher on our strength rating — 1774 to 1667. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.1% of 12,702 such games. Ajax hold 11 more possession points (63 to 52 in recent games) across a 108-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 75–150-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,592 such games where the class table expected 41.3%. The 300 most similar past games finished 54–26–20.
Why only 57%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Ajax's column. Across 10,596 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Heerenveen win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,797. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The control factor adds 1.2 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Heerenveen are winless in their last 11 visits to Ajax. "Cursed ground" stories don't survive the receipts: winless visitors won 20.5% of 5,614 return visits vs 21.4% class-expected — the rating's own read already covers it. Ajax's last five: W-W-W-W-D — clearly the hotter side on recent results, and unbeaten in their last 8. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.8% of 2182 games when clearly hotter and 42.9% of 3991 when clearly colder. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
