Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Southampton 42%, the draw 32%, Millwall 26%. It finished Southampton 5–1 Millwall.
Southampton's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Southampton are a shade stronger on our strength rating, and that is most of Southampton's 42%. The draw at 32% is helped by a draw-heavy league.
Why Southampton at 42%?
Southampton sit 61 points higher on our strength rating — 1664 to 1604. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge at home won 50.6% of 10,384 such games.
Why only 42%?
Millwall sit -0.34 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Visitors this cold went on to win 32.5% of 1,326 games, vs 28.9% for visitors finishing normally. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Southampton's column. Across 10,761 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Millwall win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 26.5%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,679. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Millwall are missing 3 regular starters — Oluwafemi Azeez, Tristan Crama, Ryan Leonard — about 26% of their usual starting-XI weight. A body count alone told us nothing.
