Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave West Brom 55%, the draw 29%, Watford 16%. It finished West Brom 1–0 Watford.
West Brom's rating edge, but the draw is in play — West Brom are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their control of the ball on top gives West Brom a clear lead. The draw at 29% is helped by a draw-heavy league.
Why West Brom at 55%?
West Brom sit 104 points higher on our strength rating — 1454 to 1351. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.1% of 12,775 such games. West Brom hold 9 more possession points (55 to 46 in recent games) across a 104-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 75–150-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,650 such games where the class table expected 41.3%. The 300 most similar past games finished 48–25–27.
Why only 55%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims West Brom's column. Across 10,911 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Championship home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (26.9% vs 24.9% norm). Championship homes won 43.0% of 8,403 games vs 44.9% across all 99,727 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Watford win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 3.1 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,965. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
West Brom have gained 66 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: climbing sides won 41.4% of 12,294 such games vs 40.7% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Watford have shed 71 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.7% of 9,701 such games vs 34.6% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
