Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave SC Freiburg 73%, the draw 16%, FC Schalke 04 11%. It finished SC Freiburg 2–1 FC Schalke 04.
SC Freiburg's rating gap decides it — SC Freiburg are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of SC Freiburg's 73%. The draw at 16% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why SC Freiburg at 73%?
SC Freiburg sit 244 points higher on our strength rating — 1760 to 1516. Sides with a more than 240-point rating edge at home won 79.2% of 5,553 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 72–16–12.
Why not higher?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims SC Freiburg's column. Across 11,278 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.7%, with draws up 1.4 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw only 16%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 15.8%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 23.2% of 16,880. Early-season fixtures add 1.4 points to the draw. The goals environment takes 1.3 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
SC Freiburg have averaged 6 percentage points more possession than FC Schalke 04 in recent games. That doesn’t change our forecast here. FC Schalke 04 are newly promoted — game 5 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides are said to struggle, but our rating already carries most of it: across 3,012 first-ten games since 2016 they won 26.8% where the rating expected 28.1% — inside the noise band, below it in six of the ten full seasons we hold and about level last season. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
