Barreiro double sends Benfica past Maritimo in Primeira Liga
Benfica moved to the top end of the Primeira Liga table with a 3-0 win away to Maritimo in matchday five, a result built on a rapid start and a controlled finish. Leandro Barreiro opened the scoring inside seven minutes to give Marco Silva's side an early platform to work from.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Maritimo, level at the break, could not find a way back into the contest and the visitors extended their lead in the second half. Barreiro struck again in the 71st minute, converting after being set up by Vangelis Pavlidis, before Gianluca Prestianni added a third in the 82nd minute to settle the outcome.
Benfica dominated the underlying numbers despite having only 40% of possession, managing 11 shots to Maritimo's six and putting six on target compared to the home side's solitary effort. Maritimo committed the more fouls of the two sides, with 22 to Benfica's 14, as M. van der Gaag's team struggled to contain the visitors' movement in behind.
Barreiro scored twice, either side of the interval, to finish as the top-rated player on the pitch with a mark of 8.78.
Benfica's six shots on target to Maritimo's one underlined how much more clinical the visitors were in front of goal.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Maritimo 7%, the draw 15%, Benfica 78%. It finished Maritimo 0–3 Benfica.
Benfica's rating gap outweighs Maritimo's home ground — Benfica are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top makes it one-sided for Benfica. The draw at 15% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Benfica at 78%?
Benfica sit 565 points higher on our strength rating — 1457 to 2023. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge on the road won 65.9% of 5,230 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Maritimo's column. Across 10,911 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 8–12–80.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 78% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 15% and Maritimo at 7%.
Why is the draw only 15%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 14.0%. These teams' recent games average 3.7 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,073. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment takes 1.2 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Benfica average 14 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 565 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Maritimo are newly promoted — game 5 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
