Silipo brace sinks Avellino as Ascoli fight back from behind
Ascoli came from behind to beat Avellino 3-1 at the Cino e Lillo Del Duca in Serie B's fifth round, overturning a half-time deficit with three second-half goals. Raffaele Russo had given the visitors an early lead, but the hosts responded after the break to take control of the contest.

Russo opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing off an assist from Martin Palumbo to put Avellino ahead at the break, with the away side leading 1-0 at half-time. Ascoli levelled four minutes into the second half when Patrick Enrici turned the ball into his own net, setting the platform for the hosts to push forward.
Andrea Silipo then took charge, converting an assist from Tommaso Milanese in the 72nd minute to put Ascoli 2-1 up before adding a second in the 86th minute, this time set up by Gabriele Gori, to complete the turnaround. The result lifted Ascoli to third in the table on 10 points from five games, while Avellino remained sixth with seven points.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Ascoli 43%, the draw 37%, Avellino 20%. It finished Ascoli 3–1 Avellino.
Level sides, Ascoli's control of the ball swings it — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Ascoli's control of the ball gives Ascoli the lean. The draw at 37% is helped by a draw-heavy league.
Why Ascoli in front?
Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1449 to 1415. Sides this close won 45.6% of 14,661 home games (draw 26.5%, visitors 27.9%). Ascoli hold 6 more possession points (56 to 50 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, home teams with this control edge won 47.9% of 5,225 games, vs 43.9% when styles were level.
Why only 43%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Serie B home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (32.2% vs 24.9% norm) and away wins (26.1% vs 30.2%). Serie B homes won 41.7% of 4,053 games vs 44.9% across all 100,303 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Ascoli's column. Across 11,181 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Avellino win?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.5%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,851. Serie B runs draw-heavy, adding 7.4 points. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Ascoli are newly promoted — game 5 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. Ascoli won 2 of the last 4 meetings with Avellino. The record is 2 wins for Ascoli, 2 draws and 0 wins for Avellino. These were 4 Serie B games played at both grounds between 3 December 2016 and 5 May 2018. Latest meeting: 5 May 2018 — Ascoli 1–1 Avellino. In 5,104 historical matches between similarly rated teams, home sides with the stronger head-to-head record won 43.0%.
