Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Birmingham 12%, the draw 20%, Brentford 68%. It finished Birmingham 1–6 Brentford.
Brentford's rating gap outweighs Birmingham's home ground — Brentford are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Brentford's 68%. The draw at 20% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why Brentford at 68%?
Brentford sit 474 points higher on our strength rating — 1485 to 1959. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge on the road won 65.8% of 5,205 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 11–20–69.
Why only 68%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 68% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 20% and Birmingham at 12%.
Why is the draw only 20%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 19.5%. These teams' recent games average 2.4 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,656. The goals environment adds 1.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 6 between them: Birmingham 2 wins, 4 draws, Brentford 0 wins. Most recently Brentford 0–0 Birmingham, 5 years ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 43.1% of 5055 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points.
