Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Reading 3%, the draw 6%, Brentford 91%. It finished Reading 1–2 Brentford.
Brentford's rating gap outweighs Reading's home ground — Brentford are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and a cup tie across divisions on top makes it one-sided for Brentford. The draw at 6% is cut by the cup-tie effect.
Why Brentford at 91%?
Brentford sit 546 points higher on our strength rating — 1418 to 1964. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge on the road won 65.9% of 5,254 such games. A cup tie across divisions: Brentford carry a 546-point rating edge over Reading, whose league sits outside the divisions we rate. Ratings compress across divisions — a favorite like this is usually better than its number. Higher-division cup favorites won 77.3% of 1,316 such ties where the class table expected 59.8% — positive in every recent season, and it passed our walked forward test before earning points. The 300 most similar past games finished 7–13–80.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 91% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 6% and Reading at 3%.
Why is the draw only 6%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 14.5%. These teams' recent games average 3.3 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,220. Cup ties across divisions take 9.6 points off the draw. The goals environment takes 1.2 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?

These were 6 Championship games played between 29 September 2018 and 10 February 2021. Latest meeting: 10 February 2021 — Reading 1–3 Brentford. In 5,639 historical matches between similarly rated teams, visiting sides with the stronger head-to-head record won 28.1%.
