Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Real Salt Lake 48%, the draw 26%, New York City FC 26%. It finished Real Salt Lake 0–2 New York City FC.
Level sides, home ground swings it — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Major League Soccer home advantage gives Real Salt Lake the lean. The draw at 26% is what level sides usually produce.
Why Real Salt Lake in front?
Home ground, mostly. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1548 to 1587. Sides this close won 43.1% of 15,973 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.2%). Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.8% vs 30.2%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.3% of 5,159 games vs 44.9% across all 100,077 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 48%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Level sides split the rest: the draw at 26% and New York City FC at 26%.
Why the draw at 26%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 2.9 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,048.
What did we measure but not count?
New York City FC have shed 65 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.7% of 9,737 such games vs 34.6% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Real Salt Lake are missing 3 regular starters — Stijn Spierings, Morgan Guilavogui, Philip Quinton — about 24% of their usual starting-XI weight. A body count alone told us nothing.
