Profile
Marcus Tavernier is a left-footed wide midfielder whose threat comes from changing the angle of an attack. He can begin on either flank or behind a striker, then carry towards goal or move inside as a teammate goes outside. The spaces he uses matter more than his position on the team sheet.
His route to the Premier League ran through Middlesbrough. He played Championship football in 2017/18 and had a League One loan at MK Dons during the same season. He then built up regular senior minutes over several Championship campaigns. By the time Bournemouth signed him in summer 2022, he was an experienced league player rather than an untested academy prospect.
There was a youth international chapter too. Tavernier started for England against Ukraine at the 2018 European Under-19 Championship and put them ahead with a half-volley after a cleared corner. The match ended 1-1.
Tavernier made his Premier League debut for Bournemouth against Aston Villa on 6 August 2022. In his first season, a league tactical review noted how he played from both wings but reached the penalty area more often as Bournemouth attacked at speed under Gary O'Neil. The winger's starting lane did not confine him to supplying crosses from the touchline.
His role evolved again in 2025/26. Premier League analysis in January described a player able to fill any of the three attacking midfield positions. By May, the league was describing Tavernier on the left, cutting inside while full-back Adrien Truffert supplied width. He could also exchange positions with Junior Kroupi.
Carrying at pace is another way Tavernier turns those positions into chances. The league's January analysis identified him as Bournemouth's closest remaining ball-carrying threat after Antoine Semenyo left, with his carries leading to shots and opportunities for teammates. His left foot also produced a different kind of moment in October 2025: a goal scored directly from a corner against Nottingham Forest.
Bournemouth finished sixth in the 2025/26 Premier League and qualified for European football for the first time. Tavernier then appeared in the club's 2026/27 Europa League campaign. His contribution is best understood through the roles he had learned to combine: runner with the ball, inside attacker and partner to an overlapping full-back.
Marcus Tavernier currently plays for Bournemouth as a midfielder.
