Why this comparison
The comparison was made for them in one week. On 31 May 2025 Doué, then 19, scored twice and set up another as Paris Saint-Germain beat Inter 5–0 in the Champions League final, and the next day UEFA's technical observers named him the competition's young player of the season, an award ESPN reported he had won ahead of Yamal. On TNT Sports Rio Ferdinand asked whether this was a changing of the guard, and the Telegraph and ESPN wrote of a rivalry to follow Messi and Ronaldo's; Steven Gerrard, on the same TNT Sports panel, called comparisons that early very dangerous. Five days later, in their first meeting, Yamal scored twice.
Since then most of the contest has been on ballots. The 2025 Kopa Trophy, voted on by former Ballon d'Or winners, went to Yamal by 124 points to Doué's 72; in the Ballon d'Or itself Yamal was runner-up and Doué 14th. Doué took the 2025 Golden Boy, which Yamal, the 2024 winner, was not allowed to win twice. On paper both play on the right, but only one stays there: in the two years to 16 October 2026, our line-ups put 94% of Yamal's minutes on the right wing and 64% of Doué's, with most of Doué's other minutes on the left wing or in central midfield.

Have they played each other?
Their two competitive meetings up to 16 October 2026, both in the list below, were France against Spain, and Spain won each time. In the Nations League semi-final, in Stuttgart on 5 June 2025, Doué made his first start for France, on the left, with Yamal on Spain's right. Yamal was booked in the 33rd minute for a foul on Doué, won a penalty from Adrien Rabiot and scored it to make it 3–0, then made it 5–1 from Pedro Porro's pass, and UEFA made him player of the match. Doué had three shots, two of them saved by Unai Simón, and was replaced by Bradley Barcola after 63 minutes with Spain 4–1 up; France scored three times after he went off and lost 5–4. In the World Cup semi-final at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on 14 July 2026, Yamal played the whole game with no recorded shot and won the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal scored: Lucas Digne kicked him while trying to clear a ball he had miscontrolled, though the ball had struck Yamal's elbow first, AP noted. After Porro made it 2–0, a Yamal goal was ruled out for offside. Doué came on for Barcola after 57 minutes and, in the 81st, tried to lob Simón, who saved. Their current teams have met four more times since Yamal's Barcelona debut in April 2023 without both of them on the pitch, and each time Doué was the one missing: he was still a Rennes player when Barcelona and PSG met in the 2024 Champions League quarter-final, was not in France's squad for the EURO 2024 semi-final, in which Yamal scored, and was out with a calf injury for PSG's 2–1 win in Barcelona on 1 October 2025. Neither has ever been the other's team-mate, for club or country. Their first meeting for their clubs, and third in all, came at the Parc des Princes on 20 October 2026, when PSG beat Barcelona 4–2 in the Champions League: Doué opened the scoring, and Yamal made it 2–2 in the second half.

What the numbers don't show
The card's 2025/26 window adds club to country and includes the World Cup, and in that season the two played very different amounts: 4,468 minutes in 55 games for Yamal, 3,008 in 50 for Doué. Injury is not the main reason: by Transfermarkt's count Doué missed 18 games and Yamal 17. Doué lost most of the autumn of 2025, first to a calf injury picked up with France on 5 September and then to a torn thigh muscle at Lorient on 29 October, and was out until December; Yamal had groin trouble in three shorter spells between September and November 2025 and a hamstring injury in April 2026 that kept him out of Barcelona's last six league games. The larger gap was in how they were used: Yamal started 51 of his 55 games and Doué 34 of his 50. Per 90 minutes the card calls their goals and chances created too close to call, has Yamal slightly ahead on assists without naming him the leader, and names Doué only on pass completion, 86% to 81%. None of Doué's 14 goals that season came from the penalty spot; six of Yamal's 25 did, hence the card's 14 to 19 without penalties.
The same position hides two ways of playing it. Yamal tries to take defenders on far more often, 9.3 times per 90 minutes in 2025/26 against 5.3 for Doué in our match data, almost always playing on the right. Doué has been moved around: Luis Enrique has used him on both wings, in midfield and up front, and he does more work without the ball, with 0.7 interceptions per 90 against 0.4 in 2025/26 and, across the two years up to 16 October 2026, 2.3 tackles per 90 against 1.3. His passing figure may owe something to those roles too: the card's own note warns that pass completion depends a lot on role and team.

Questions fans ask
Who is better, Doué or Yamal?
Most of the votes have gone to Yamal: the 2025 Kopa Trophy by 124 points to 72 and second place to Doué's 14th in the 2025 Ballon d'Or. For 2026 Yamal was on the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist, which did not include Doué, and at the ceremony in London on 26 October 2026 he finished third and won a third Kopa Trophy. Doué's wins came in 2025, after the season of his two goals in the Champions League final: the competition's young player award for 2024–25, chosen by UEFA's technical observers, and the 2025 Golden Boy, for which Yamal, as a past winner, was not eligible. Ousmane Dembélé, Doué's team-mate at PSG, who played in Yamal's first Barcelona game before leaving for Paris, said in June 2025 that, honestly, the two were as good as each other. The card above calls a row only where the gap is wide enough to trust: for 2025/26 it gives Doué pass completion and nothing else, and on the two-year view, to 16 October 2026, it adds goals for Yamal.
Doué vs Yamal stats: who has scored and set up more?
Yamal, in each of 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26, and in 2026–27 up to mid-October. In 2025/26, club and country together and competitive games only, he scored 25 and set up 20 in 55 games, Doué 14 and 10 in 50 on the card's count (ESPN's data gives Doué nine assists); over the two years to 16 October 2026 the card counts 53 goals and 46 assists for Yamal in 117 games, and 33 and 28 for Doué in 121. In 2026–27, up to 15 October, Yamal had 12 goals and 10 assists in 14 games for Barcelona and Spain, Doué three and five in 13 for PSG and France, though Doué's three included the winner in the UEFA Super Cup and a goal and an assist inside two minutes in PSG's 4–2 win at Manchester City on 14 October. For Spain, Yamal had 11 goals in 37 caps by 6 October 2026; Doué had four in 19 for France. In their three meetings Yamal scored three times and Doué once.
Did Doué say he was better than Yamal?
Once, with a smile. In late July 2025, in a clip that circulated on TikTok, Doué was asked which of the two was better and answered that it was a very good question, and that it was him; French, Spanish and English outlets picked it up on 29 and 30 July. Nearly four months earlier, before a Champions League quarter-final in April 2025, he had turned the same comparison aside, saying that to improve he compared himself with himself. We found no public reply from Yamal.
Yamal or Doué: who has won more?
It splits by competition. Doué has the club side of it: the Champions League with PSG in 2025 and again in 2026, starting both finals, as well as two Ligue 1 titles, the 2025 Coupe de France, two Trophées des Champions, two UEFA Super Cups and the 2025 Intercontinental Cup, but no senior trophy with France. Yamal has the international side: the 2026 World Cup and EURO 2024 with Spain, to go with three LaLiga titles, including the 2022–23 title, for which he played seven minutes, the 2025 Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cups in January 2025 and January 2026. He has never played in a Champions League final: Barcelona went out in the semi-finals in 2025 and the quarter-finals in 2026. Among individual prizes Yamal has the Kopa Trophy of 2024, 2025 and 2026, the 2024 Golden Boy, EURO 2024's young player award and LaLiga's award for the best player of 2025–26; Doué has the 2025 Golden Boy, the Champions League's young player award for 2024–25, the player of the match award in the 2025 final and Ligue 1's young player award in 2025 and 2026.
When do Doué and Yamal next play each other?
Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4–2 at the Parc des Princes on 20 October 2026, on the third matchday of the Champions League league phase. That was the clubs' only league-phase game, so any second meeting in 2026–27 depends on the knockout draws, from February 2027. France and Spain were drawn in separate Nations League groups, which means they can meet in a quarter-final in March 2027 only if one of them wins its group and the other finishes second, and otherwise not before the finals in June 2027.
Who is older, Doué or Yamal?
Doué, by two years and a month: he was born in Angers on 3 June 2005, and Yamal on 13 July 2007, on the edge of Barcelona in Esplugues de Llobregat. Yamal reached each step younger: he played his first game for Barcelona at 15, in April 2023, and scored on his Spain debut, in Tbilisi in September 2023, aged 16. Doué made his first-team debut for Rennes at 17, in August 2022, moved to PSG in August 2024 and first played for France at 19, against Croatia in March 2025. Yamal has played for no other club and is under contract at Barcelona until June 2031; Doué's PSG contract runs to June 2029.
