Why this comparison
Mbappé, 19 months older, has usually reached the landmarks first by date; Haaland has tended to reach them younger and in fewer games. Mbappé won Tuttosport's Golden Boy, the journalists' award for the best under-21 player in European football, in 2017; Haaland won it in 2020. UEFA's milestone tables at the end of 2025–26 had Haaland as the fastest to 20, 30, 40 and 50 Champions League goals and the youngest to 20, 30 and 40, while Mbappé became the youngest to 70 in April 2026. In September 2026 the count stood at 59 Champions League goals in 59 games for Haaland and 71 in 99 for Mbappé.
The 2026 World Cup put France and Norway in the same group, and at the draw Didier Deschamps named the two as contenders to finish top scorer. When the teams met in Foxborough on 26 June, both were already through, and Norway's coach, Ståle Solbakken, kept Haaland on the bench to rest him in a 4–1 France win. Mbappé went on to win the Golden Boot with 10 goals in eight games, and Haaland scored seven in five games as Norway reached their first World Cup quarter-final. Both were on the 30-player list for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, due to be presented in London on 26 October.

Have they played each other?
By the end of September 2026 the two had faced each other four times, all in the Champions League, and had never played in the same team. In February 2020, aged 19, Haaland scored both Dortmund goals in a 2–1 first-leg win over Paris Saint-Germain, and Mbappé set up Neymar's goal; three weeks later PSG won 2–0 in an empty Parc des Princes, Mbappé came off the bench after a sore throat, and PSG's players mocked Haaland's meditation celebration. In February 2025 Haaland scored twice at the Etihad and Mbappé once, but Jude Bellingham's stoppage-time goal gave Real Madrid a 3–2 win. In the March 2026 second leg Haaland scored again before he was replaced, and Mbappé came on only after he had gone, so they never shared the pitch that night. Four more games between their teams went ahead with one of them missing. Haaland, carrying a knee knock, stayed on the bench in Madrid in February 2025 while Mbappé scored a hat-trick; knee trouble kept Mbappé out of City's 2–1 win at the Bernabéu in December 2025 and Real's 3–0 first-leg win in March 2026; and Norway rested Haaland when France beat them at the World Cup. Nothing more was on the calendar by late September 2026: the 2026–27 Champions League draw kept City and Real Madrid apart until the knockout rounds at the earliest, and France and Norway sat in separate groups of the Nations League.

What the numbers don't show
They score from different starting points. Haaland plays through the middle and is left-footed; ESPN counted 22.5 touches per match for him across his club games of 2025–26, and in 2024 Opta Analyst called him a throwback to the pure penalty-box striker. Mbappé is right-footed and has long preferred to start on the left and cut inside, though Real Madrid have mostly used him through the middle; Transfermarkt lists him as a centre-forward who also plays on both wings. It shows in what they create for others: when each turned 26, Planet Football counted 74 assists for Haaland and 163 for Mbappé.
Since their first meeting in February 2020, weeks after Haaland joined Dortmund, they have been billed as the next Messi and Ronaldo, a label both have played down, and in June 2026 Il Post argued that it had not yet become a real rivalry, not least because they have never played in the same league. The arguments fans keep having are about the kind of player more than the numbers. One side calls Mbappé the more complete forward and Haaland a finisher who needs service; the other points to Haaland's scoring rate. Each also carries a big-game charge. Against Haaland, that he fades in the biggest matches, though his two goals knocked Brazil out of the 2026 World Cup; against Mbappé, that his teams have never won the Champions League with him, though no one has scored more World Cup goals. Their four meetings feed both: Haaland scored five goals in them, yet Mbappé's side won all three ties.

Questions fans ask
Have Haaland and Mbappé played against each other?
Four times by September 2026, all in the Champions League: in both legs of the 2020 last-16 tie between Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, and in two of the five games between Manchester City and Real Madrid from February 2025 to March 2026, although in the second of those, in March 2026, Haaland had gone off before Mbappé came on. Mbappé's team won three of those four games, and Haaland scored five goals to Mbappé's one.
Who has scored more goals, Haaland or Mbappé?
The live comparison above has a 2026/27 window, updated each night from their official games for club and country. Comparing them at the same age, Planet Football found Haaland on 359 goals in 435 games at 26 and Mbappé on 344 in 477. In 2025–26 Mbappé scored 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid, 25 of them in LaLiga, and Haaland 38 in 52 for City, 27 in the Premier League; adding their competitive games for their countries, each scored 57 that season, 58 counting friendlies. For their countries, Mbappé had 67 goals in 107 games for France by 25 September 2026, and Haaland 65 in 57 for Norway two days later.
Who is better, Haaland or Mbappé?
Our written sections take no side; the live verdict near the top comes from the stats for the window you select. No stat decides the kind of forward you prefer: Haaland is a finisher through the middle, while Mbappé also runs at defenders from wide and has set up far more goals. Each holds records the other doesn't: Haaland scored 36 goals in the 2022–23 Premier League, the most in any Premier League season, and Mbappé is the first player to win two World Cup Golden Boots, in 2022 and 2026.
Who is faster, Haaland or Mbappé?
Their top speeds are close, and each has been the quicker in different seasons, so no single reading settles it. On UEFA's Champions League tracking, Haaland's fastest was the higher in 2022–23 and 2024–25, and Mbappé's in 2023–24 and 2025–26; their best Champions League readings were 36.57 km/h for Haaland, in 2024–25, and 36.71 km/h for Mbappé, in 2021–22. In their February 2025 meeting at the Etihad, UEFA had Mbappé at 35.6 km/h and Haaland at 33.2. Mbappé's 36.5 km/h against Portugal was the fastest recorded at EURO 2024.
Could Haaland join Mbappé at Real Madrid?
Real Madrid have long been linked with Haaland, but in January 2025 he signed a contract with Manchester City to 2034, which ESPN reported removed the release clauses of his 2022 deal. When a candidate in Real Madrid's presidential election promised in June 2026 to sign him, saying he had a release clause, City called that untrue and said no clause in his contract would allow it, and Haaland's agent and father denied the story too. The candidate lost the election a few days later.
What have Haaland and Mbappé won?
Neither had won the Ballon d'Or by September 2026; both came closest in 2023, when Haaland was second and Mbappé third. Each has the big team prize the other is missing: Haaland won the Champions League with City in 2023, as part of a treble, and Mbappé won the World Cup with France in 2018, at 19. Mbappé's club titles include seven in Ligue 1, with Monaco and PSG. Haaland has two Premier League titles, from 2023 and 2024. Across 2024–25 and 2025–26 Haaland won three trophies with City, the 2024 Community Shield and the 2026 FA Cup and League Cup, and Mbappé two with Real Madrid, the Intercontinental Cup and UEFA Super Cup, both in 2024.
