Why this comparison

Since 2023 the two have taken turns at the top of Europe's scoring charts. Kane won the European Golden Shoe in 2023–24 with 36 Bundesliga goals, Mbappé won it in 2024–25 with 31 in LaLiga, and Kane took it back in 2025–26, again with 36. They shared the 2024 Gerd Müller Trophy, the Ballon d'Or night's prize for the top scorer, on 52 goals each for club and country in 2023–24, the season they also finished level as the Champions League's top scorers with eight. In 2025–26 Mbappé topped that list by one goal, 15 to 14.

Both made the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, published on 8 September, and ESPN's headline had them leading it. The award judges the 2025–26 season, and the ceremony was due in London on 26 October. Neither had won it before: Mbappé's best finish was third, in 2023, and Kane's was tenth, in 2017, 2018 and 2024. Three coaches have managed both. Mauricio Pochettino had Kane at Tottenham and Mbappé at Paris Saint-Germain; Thomas Tuchel coached Mbappé at PSG and Kane at Bayern before becoming England's head coach in January 2025; and José Mourinho, Kane's manager at Tottenham from 2019 to 2021, took charge of Mbappé at Real Madrid in summer 2026.

Have they played each other?

Up to September 2026 their three competitive meetings had all been quarter-finals, and both players stayed on for every minute of each. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, France beat England 2–1: Kane scored a penalty that equalled Wayne Rooney's England record of 53 goals, then sent a second one over the bar six minutes from time. In the 2025–26 Champions League, Bayern won 2–1 at the Bernabéu and 4–3 in Munich, 6–4 on aggregate. Both scored in each leg, and Kane set up Michael Olise's stoppage-time winner in Munich. They also met in a friendly in June 2017, France's 3–2 win at the Stade de France, when Kane scored twice and Mbappé set up the winning goal; the list below counts competitive games only. Kane sat out the 2026 World Cup third-place match, a 6–4 England win over France, as an unused substitute, while Mbappé scored twice. No further meeting was scheduled by late September 2026: Real Madrid and Bayern had avoided each other in the Champions League league-phase draw, and England and France were in different Nations League groups.

What the numbers don't show

They reach their goals by different routes. Kane often comes deep, towards midfield, to connect the play. Opta Analyst counted 39 chances created by him in the 2025–26 Bundesliga, a total only 13 players beat, none of them centre-forwards. Mbappé is more often the one shooting: Goal noted that he led LaLiga in total shots in 2025–26. Mauricio Pochettino put the difference this way in The Athletic before their 2022 meeting: Kane needs to feel connected to the game, while Mbappé can go five or ten minutes without being involved and then decide it. The card at the top counts chances created the way Opta does, as passes that lead straight to a shot, so neither shows the passes earlier in a move, where much of Kane's deeper work happens.

Both take their team's penalties, so the page's check without penalties matters here. Opta Analyst counted 41 club penalties scored by Kane between the 2022 World Cup and June 2026, more than anyone in Europe's top five leagues, with Mbappé next on 30. By Transfermarkt's count on 29 September 2026, Kane had scored 111 of his 126 career penalties and Mbappé 66 of 82. Each missed an important one in 2026: Yassine Bounou saved Mbappé's in the World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, and Kane's, in England's Nations League defeat by Spain in September, hit the bar after he slipped.

Two arguments recur. One is that Kane's goals come in a weaker league; between April 2025 and May 2026 he scored in six Champions League knockout appearances in a row, matching a run by Cristiano Ronaldo from April 2012 to April 2013. The other is that Mbappé's big scoring seasons at Real Madrid came without the biggest team prizes: Barcelona won LaLiga in both, and Madrid's Champions League runs ended in the quarter-finals both times, even though Mbappé finished as LaLiga's top scorer in each.

Questions fans ask

Have Kane and Mbappé played against each other?

In competitive football, three times up to September 2026: the 2022 World Cup quarter-final, which France won, and both legs of the 2026 Champions League quarter-final, which Bayern won. Kane scored three goals in those games, one of them a penalty, and Mbappé two. Counting their 2017 friendly, Kane has scored five goals in the four games they have both played. They have never played on the same side.

Who is better, Kane or Mbappé?

The writing on this page takes no side: the live verdict above is calculated for whichever window you choose. What no count can settle is a preference in forwards: Kane links the play and scores, while Mbappé's game is built on runs in behind and shots. Each has a claim the other can't match: Mbappé a World Cup winner's medal from 2018 and a record 22 goals at World Cups, Kane two European Golden Shoes to Mbappé's one.

Who has scored more goals, Kane or Mbappé?

For 2026/27, pick that window at the top: it counts every official game for club and country and is refreshed nightly. In 2025–26 each was his league's top scorer, Kane with 36 Bundesliga goals and Mbappé with 25 in LaLiga, and Kane's 61 for Bayern in all competitions were the most by a player in Europe's top five leagues since Cristiano Ronaldo also scored 61, in 2014–15, with Mbappé next on 42. Each is his country's record scorer, Mbappé with 67 goals in 107 France games by 25 September 2026 and Kane with 86 in 122 for England a day later.

Are Kane and Mbappé up for the 2026 Ballon d'Or?

Yes: both were among the 30 names released on 8 September 2026, and the winner was due to be revealed in London on 26 October. Opinions split: Thierry Henry backed Mbappé as the top scorer in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup, while Thomas Tuchel, Kane's England coach, told ITV that Kane deserved it after the season he had. The award judges the 2025–26 season, so the 2026/27 window above does not count towards it.

What have Kane and Mbappé won?

Mbappé's senior titles began with Ligue 1 at Monaco in 2017. He then won six more league titles with PSG between 2018 and 2024, the 2018 World Cup and 2021 Nations League with France and, in his first months with Real Madrid, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup of 2024; by September 2026 Transfermarkt counted 20 senior team titles for him. Kane won nothing with Tottenham or England, finishing runner-up in the 2019 Champions League final and at two European Championships. By September 2026 his five team titles, all with Bayern, were two Bundesliga titles, the 2025–26 DFB-Pokal and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup in 2025 and 2026.
