Why this comparison

Manchester City went for Harry Kane first. They bid for him in summer 2021, one reportedly at £100m, and on 25 August Kane announced he was staying at Tottenham. The following May, City agreed to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, ending what AFP called their "long search for a specialist centre-forward" to replace Sergio Agüero. Haaland's father, Alf-Inge, had played for City from 2000 to 2003.

That left them one Premier League season together, 2022–23, when Haaland scored a record 36 league goals and Kane, in his last year at Spurs, was second with 30. Kane joined Bayern Munich in August 2023, and since then scoring records have kept passing between them. He reached 50 Bundesliga goals in 43 games, against the 50 Haaland needed at Dortmund, and 100 goals for Bayern in 104 games, one fewer than Haaland took at City. Haaland reached 50 goals for Norway in 46 games; Kane needed 71 for England.

Goals and assists are counted from match events; the other counts come from the provider's detailed match stats. Squad importance describes the current club role over its recent club-game window; it is independent of the comparison window.

Have they played each other?

By September 2026 they had met three times in competitive matches. Two were Premier League games in 2022–23: Haaland scored in City's 4–2 win in January, and in February Kane's goal won the return 1–0 for Spurs, his 200th in the Premier League and, by Tottenham's count, the one that made him their record scorer. The third was the 2026 World Cup quarter-final in Miami on 11 July, which England won 2–1 after extra time with two goals from Jude Bellingham. Neither striker scored; a Norway goal was ruled out for a Haaland foul, and he went off after 105 minutes, tired and with a dead leg, his coach said. As of late September 2026, no further meeting was on the fixture list.

Looking up their matches…

What the numbers don't show

In September 2026 both wore No 9 for club and country, and our lineup data puts nearly all their minutes at striker, but they do different jobs there. Kane drops towards midfield to link play: ESPN's research had him on 43.8 touches a game in club football in 2025–26 to Haaland's 22.5. Opta Analyst drew the line in 2024, counting Haaland among the "pure penalty box strikers" it saw "verging on a dying breed" and Kane as "a kind of 9/10 hybrid". By then Opta had Haaland scoring once every 22.7 touches in the Premier League, the fewest per goal of any player since 2006–07.

Penalties make up more of Kane's goals, which is why the page also compares their goals without them. By ESPN's count in July 2026, Kane had scored 109 of 123 career penalties and Haaland 57 of 67: similar success rates, but Kane had taken almost twice as many. Kane also missed one against Spain on 26 September 2026, slipping and hitting the bar.

Bayern won the Bundesliga in 2024–25 and 2025–26 under Vincent Kompany. City won both domestic cups in 2025–26 but finished second in the Premier League, then replaced Pep Guardiola with Enzo Maresca, who wants his wingers to stay high and wide, a change Goal expects to bring Haaland more service. Transfermarkt lists Kane missing 11 games through injury in the three seasons to 2025–26 and Haaland 21, most in 2023–24, when a bone-stress injury in his foot kept him out for 54 days.

Who is better, Kane or Haaland?

The words on this page don't pick one; the verdict at the top comes from the numbers for the window you choose. What the numbers leave open is what you want from a No 9: Kane is more involved in building attacks and creating chances, while Haaland's game is built around finishing. Kane, the day before their World Cup meeting: "I don't think it's one to compare ourselves."

Who has scored more goals this season?

Switch the window at the top to 2026/27: it counts official matches for club and country, updates every night, and names no leader until both have played 1,800 minutes. On 18 September 2026 Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals in his 98th game, against Union Berlin, the fewest anyone has needed.

Who has more goals for his country?

Both hold their country's scoring record: Kane had 86 goals in 122 games for England by 26 September 2026, and Haaland 64 in 56 for Norway by 24 September. At the 2026 World Cup Kane scored six, taking his England record at World Cups to 14, and England finished third; Haaland scored seven at his first major tournament, all from open play, as Norway reached the quarter-finals, their best World Cup finish.

What have Kane and Haaland won?

By September 2026 Haaland had won the Champions League, two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield with City, including the 2022–23 treble; earlier, the German Cup with Dortmund and the Austrian double with Salzburg. Kane won his first major trophy, the 2024–25 Bundesliga, at 31, and has since won it again and added the German Cup and two German Super Cups. Both were among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d'Or; before that ceremony, Haaland's best finish was second, in 2023, and Kane's tenth, three times.

Who is older and taller, Kane or Haaland?

Kane is older, by seven years less a week: he was born in London on 28 July 1993, and Haaland in Leeds on 21 July 2000. Haaland is the taller, at 1.95 m to Kane's 1.88 m. Both could have played for another country: Kane for Ireland through his father, Haaland for England, where he was born.
