Overview

Derby in brief

Founded in 1884 as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derby County were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. Known as the Rams and wearing black and white since the 1890s, the club play at Pride Park Stadium in Derby. They moved there for the 1997-98 season after 102 years at the Baseball Ground, which had been home since 1895.

Derby have been champions of England twice: in 1971-72 under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, and in 1974-75 under Dave Mackay, a former player under Clough. The club won the FA Cup in 1946, beating Charlton Athletic 4-1, and added the 1975 Charity Shield against West Ham United. Clough's side also reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1972-73, losing to Juventus. Four Second Division titles and the 1956-57 Third Division North championship mark the club's movement between the divisions.
