Overview

Burgos in brief

The present Burgos CF was founded in 1985 by Jose Maria Quintano, two years after the original Burgos CF was dissolved under heavy debts, and only began competing in 1994, in the regional leagues. The old club traced its roots to Burgos Foot-ball Club of 1922 and Gimnastica Burgalesa of 1936, and took the name Burgos CF in 1949. Both have played in black and white, hence Blanquinegros, at the Estadio Municipal de El Plantio, beside the river Arlanzon.

The original club won the Segunda Division in 1975-76 and spent six seasons in La Liga, in 1971-73 and 1976-80. Its reserve side carried on as Real Burgos, a separate club with three top-flight seasons. The current club rose three divisions in a row from 1994 to 1997 and reached the Segunda Division in 2001 as Segunda Division B group winners, but was relegated administratively a year later. An extra-time win over Athletic Club's reserve side in May 2021 ended almost two decades away from the second tier.
