Overview

Le Mans in brief

Le Mans were founded in 1985 through the merger of Union Sportive du Mans and Stade Olympique du Maine. Originally Le Mans Union Club 72, they adopted the Le Mans FC name in 2010. Their red and yellow colours are reflected in the Sang et Or nickname, meaning Blood and Gold. The Stade Marie-Marvingt, formerly MMArena, opened in 2011 beside the city's famous motor-racing circuit.

Christian Gourcuff led Le Mans into the second division in 1988, an early breakthrough for the young club. A regional Division 3 group title followed in 1990, while promotion to Ligue 1 first came in 2003. After relegation and another promotion in 2005, Le Mans enjoyed a longer top-flight spell. Rudi Garcia's side finished ninth in 2008, the club's highest league position during that period.
