Overview

Sao Paulo in brief

Sao Paulo FC were founded on 25 January 1930 by members of Club Athletico Paulistano, which had closed its football section, and Associacao Atletica das Palmeiras. After a 1935 merger with Clube de Regatas Tiete ended its football, the club was refounded on 16 December 1935. The red, white and black colours come from the parent clubs. Home is the Morumbi, officially the Estadio Cicero Pompeu de Toledo, first used in 1960 and completed in 1970; a naming-rights deal signed in 2023 made it MorumBIS for 2024 to 2026.

Sao Paulo have won six Brazilian titles: 1977, 1986, 1991 and three in a row from 2006 to 2008 under Muricy Ramalho. Under Tele Santana they won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in both 1992 and 1993, beating Barcelona and then Milan. A third Libertadores in 2005 was followed by the FIFA Club World Championship, won 1-0 against Liverpool in Yokohama with a goal from Mineiro. The club added the 2012 Copa Sudamericana, a first Copa do Brasil in 2023 and the 2024 Supercopa do Brasil.
