Overview

Vasco DA Gama in brief

Vasco da Gama were founded in Rio de Janeiro on 21 August 1898 as a rowing club by Portuguese immigrants and their descendants, and named after the navigator to mark 400 years since his voyage to India. Football began in 1915, when the club absorbed Lusitania Sport Club. Vasco won the 1923 Carioca title in their first top-flight season with mainly Black and working-class players, and in 1924 refused to drop 12 Black players, in a letter known as the Resposta Historica. Sao Januario, built largely with supporters' donations, opened in 1927.

The Expresso da Vitoria side of the 1940s, led by Ademir de Menezes, won the 1948 South American Championship of Champions in Santiago, a continental tournament held before the Copa Libertadores existed, and eight Vasco players were in Brazil's 1950 World Cup squad. Brazilian titles followed in 1974, 1989, 1997 and 2000, with the Libertadores in the 1998 centenary year, the 2000 Copa Mercosur and the 2011 Copa do Brasil. Vasco reached the Copa do Brasil final again in 2025, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Corinthians.
