Overview

Atletico Paranaense in brief

Athletico Paranaense were founded in Curitiba on 26 March 1924 through the merger of two local clubs, International Foot Ball Club, founded in 1912, and America Futebol Clube, founded in 1914. They play in red and black, and the nickname Furacao, the Hurricane, comes from a May 1949 newspaper headline after a heavy win over Britania. In December 2018 the club adopted the spelling Athletico and a new striped crest. Home is the Arena da Baixada, rebuilt in 1999, renovated for the 2014 World Cup and fitted with a retractable roof in 2015.

Athletico won the Brasileirao in 2001, having taken the second-tier Serie B in 1995. The following decades brought the Copa Sudamericana in 2018 and 2021, the Copa do Brasil in 2019 and the Suruga Bank Championship, a meeting with the Japanese league cup winners, in 2019. The club also reached the Copa Libertadores final in 2005 and 2022. After relegation in 2024, Athletico returned to Serie A at the first attempt by finishing second in Serie B in 2025.
