Overview

Vitoria in brief

Vitoria were founded in Salvador on 13 May 1899 as Club de Cricket Victoria by brothers Artur and Artemio Valente and other young men from the city's Vitoria neighbourhood; its first football match came in 1901. The club first wore white and black before changing to red and black, hence the name Rubro-Negro, while the nickname Leao da Barra comes from a rowing crossing between the ports of Barra and Tainheiros. Home is the Barradao, officially the Estadio Manoel Barradas, which opened on 11 November 1986 with a 1-1 draw against Santos.

Vitoria's best Serie A campaign came in 1993, when a team with five academy graduates among the starters in the final finished runners-up to Palmeiras. They also reached the Copa do Brasil final in 2010, losing to Santos. The club's first national title was Serie B in 2023. Regionally, Vitoria have won the Copa do Nordeste in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2010 and 2026, the last after beating Fortaleza in the final. They were also relegated six times between 2004 and 2021, twice to Serie C.
