Overview

Colorado Rapids in brief

The Colorado Rapids were founded on 6 June 1995 as one of the ten original MLS clubs and played their first season in 1996. The colours were green and white at first, black and blue stripes from 2003 and, since 2007, burgundy and sky blue, matching other Kroenke Sports & Entertainment teams; the shield crest shows a mountain and "96". After Mile High Stadium and Invesco Field at Mile High, the Rapids moved in 2007 to DICK'S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, about eight miles north of downtown Denver.

The Rapids reached MLS Cup in 1997, losing 2-1 to D.C. United, and the 1999 U.S. Open Cup final, lost 2-0 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Their first major title came in 2010 under coach Gary Smith: fifth in the West, they were placed in the Eastern half of the playoffs, beat Columbus Crew and San Jose Earthquakes, and won MLS Cup 2-1 after extra time against FC Dallas at BMO Field in Toronto. In 2021 they finished top of the Western Conference regular season.
