Overview

FC Sion in brief

FC Sion was founded in 1909 in Sion, the capital of the canton of Valais, by Robert Gilliard, who became the club's first captain. Its first match that year, played on the Place de la Planta, was a 3-2 win over FC Aigle. The club moved between several pitches, including ground next to the town gas works and the Parc des Sports (1928-1968), before settling at the Stade de Tourbillon. The stadium opened on 11 August 1968 and was renovated in 1989 and 2012. The team is known in French as Les Sedunois.

Sion spent most of 1932-1952 in the fourth tier. They reached the National League B in 1957 and the top flight in 1962. The club won the first of its 13 Swiss Cups in 1965 and won each of its first 13 finals before losing to Basel in 2017. Sion were Swiss champions in 1992 and 1997, and the 1997 title came with the club's only league and cup double. Money problems led to relegations in 1999 and 2001 and a refused licence in 2003. In 2006 Sion became the first second-tier team to win the Swiss Cup. They went down again in 2023 and came back up in 2024 as Challenge League champions.
