Overview

Hamburger SV in brief

Hamburger SV trace their official foundation to 1887 and took their present form through a 1919 merger of three local clubs. Based in Hamburg and known as Die Rothosen, or the Red Shorts, they wear white shirts with red shorts beneath the blue, black and white diamond crest. The Volksparkstadion in the Bahrenfeld district has been their principal league home since the Bundesliga began in 1963.

HSV have won six German championships, three DFB-Pokals, the 1983 European Cup and the 1977 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Their strongest era ran from the late 1970s into the mid-1980s, when coaches Branko Zebec and Ernst Happel built disciplined, physically powerful sides. Happel's team combined defensive control with efficient attacking play and defeated Juventus in Athens to become European champions.
