Overview

HNK Rijeka in brief

HNK Rijeka, in full Hrvatski nogometni klub Rijeka, are the football club of the Croatian port city of Rijeka. The present club was formally constituted on 29 July 1946 as Kvarner, or Quarnero in Italian, named after the surrounding Kvarner region, and inherited players, ground and supporters from the earlier club Fiumana; it also traces its roots to Club Sportivo Olimpia, whose football section is first recorded on 25 November 1906, the date the club has officially used as its founding date since 2020. It became NK Rijeka in 1954 and HNK Rijeka in 1995. The team wear white and blue and are nicknamed Rijecki bijeli, the Rijeka Whites. After decades at Kantrida, they have played since 2015 at Stadion HNK Rijeka, known as Rujevica.

Rijeka have won two Croatian league titles, each as part of a league and cup double: in 2016-17, ending Dinamo Zagreb's run of eleven consecutive championships, and in 2024-25. They have also won seven Croatian Cups, the most recent in 2025, one Croatian Super Cup and the Yugoslav Cup in 1978 and 1979, and they were Croatian Cup runners-up to Dinamo in 2026. Their furthest European run was the 1979-80 Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final, lost 2-0 on aggregate to Juventus. They have reached the Europa League group stage four times, beating AC Milan 2-0 at home in 2017, and in 2025-26 they reached the Conference League round of 16.
