Overview

Southampton in brief

Founded in 1885 by members of the St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association, Southampton take their nickname, the Saints, from those church origins. The Hampshire club play in red and white and have been based at St Mary's Stadium since 2001, after more than a century at The Dell.

Southampton won the Southern League six times and reached FA Cup finals in 1900 and 1902 before becoming founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920. They won the Third Division South in 1921-22 and the Third Division in 1959-60 under Ted Bates. Their defining day came in 1976, when Bobby Stokes scored the only goal as Southampton, then a Second Division side, beat Manchester United to win the FA Cup. They were First Division runners-up in 1983-84, founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and Football League Trophy winners in 2010.
