Overview

Las Palmas in brief

UD Las Palmas were founded on 22 August 1949 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria through the merger of five local clubs: Real Club Victoria, Marino FC, CD Gran Canaria, Atletico Club and Arenas Club. The crown on the crest was inherited from Real Club Victoria. The club says its yellow and blue were taken from the flag of the island of Gran Canaria, and the yellow shirts give the nickname Los Amarillos. After decades at the Estadio Insular, the club moved to the Estadio de Gran Canaria in 2003.

Las Palmas have won Segunda Division four times, in 1953-54, 1963-64, 1984-85 and 1999-2000, and Segunda Division B groups in 1992-93 and 1995-96. Their peak came in a run of 19 straight top-flight seasons from 1964 to 1983: runners-up in La Liga in 1968-69 and Copa del Rey finalists in 1978, losing 3-1 to Barcelona. Promoted in 2023, they were relegated from La Liga in 2025 and lost the 2025-26 play-off semi-final to Malaga.
