Almeria

UD Almeria were founded on 26 July 1989 by businessman Guillermo Blanes as Almeria Club de Futbol and took their present name in 2001, a change presented as a merger with Polideportivo Almeria. Earlier city clubs, such as AD Almeria, who played in La Liga in 1979-80 and 1980-81, are separate predecessors. The red and white come from the Genoese flag adopted by the city. Home is the stadium built for the 2005 Mediterranean Games, called Power Horse Stadium from 2022 and UD Almeria Stadium since 2024.

Under Unai Emery, Almeria won a first promotion to La Liga in 2007 and finished eighth in 2007-08, still the club's best league placing. A first Copa del Rey semi-final came in 2010-11, the season they went down. A play-off win over Girona in 2013 brought two more top-flight seasons. After Turki Al-Sheikh bought the club in 2019, Almeria won the Segunda Division in 2021-22, were relegated in 2024 and lost the 2026 promotion play-off final to Malaga.
