Overview

SV Darmstadt 98 in brief

SV Darmstadt 98 date from 22 May 1898, when FK Olympia 1898 Darmstadt was founded, and took their present name after a merger with SC Darmstadt 1905 on 11 November 1919. Blue and white come from the city colours, and the lily in the crest, taken from Darmstadt's coat of arms, gives the nickname Die Lilien. The club have played at the Bollenfalltor since 1921. Merck has held the naming rights since 2014, apart from 2016-17, and the ground was rebuilt in stages between 2016 and 2023.

Darmstadt won the 2. Bundesliga Sued in 1978 and 1981, each time followed by a single Bundesliga season, and the Regionalliga Sued in 1973 and 2011. In 2013 they finished in the 3. Liga relegation places but stayed up when Kickers Offenbach were refused a licence. Coach Dirk Schuster then led back-to-back promotions: through a 2014 play-off against Arminia Bielefeld and, as runners-up in 2015, to the top flight after 33 years. A 2023 promotion under Torsten Lieberknecht ended with relegation in 2024.
