Overview

Arouca in brief

FC Arouca were founded in 1952 as Ginasio Clube de Arouca and later took their current name. The club represents the small town of Arouca, in the Aveiro district and part of the Porto metropolitan area. The team play in yellow and blue at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca, opened in 2006 in the valley of the river Arda, and are known as the Lobos, or Wolves.

Arouca spent their first five decades in the Aveiro regional leagues before a rapid rise: they won the fourth-tier Terceira Divisao in 2007-08 and the third-tier Segunda Divisao in 2009-10, then reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in 2013. In 2015-16 they finished fifth, their best league placing, and in their first European campaign beat Heracles Almelo before losing a Europa League play-off to Olympiacos after extra time.
