Overview

Casa Pia in brief

Casa Pia Atletico Clube were founded in Lisbon on 3 July 1920, at the initiative of Candido de Oliveira and others linked to Casa Pia, the city's historic children's charity. The team play in black and are nicknamed Os Gansos, the Geese. The club's own ground is the Estadio Pina Manique, opened in 1954 and named after the charity's founder; while it awaits redevelopment, senior home matches have been staged at the Estadio Municipal de Rio Maior.

Casa Pia were among Lisbon's strongest sides in the early 1920s, winning the Lisbon Championship in their first season. When Portugal played their first international, against Spain in December 1921, Casa Pia supplied several players, including captain Candido de Oliveira, and the national team wore black kit lent by the club. Casa Pia played in the first national Primeira Divisao season, 1938-39, then spent 83 years away before returning to the Primeira Liga in 2022.
