Match report
Hinshelwood double sinks Villa as Brighton run riot at the Amex
Brighton thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 in the Premier League's opening round, with all four goals arriving inside the first half at the Amex Stadium. Fabian Hurzeler's side were ruthless from the start, while Unai Emery's Villa fell apart after an early setback and never recovered.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The hosts broke through in the eighth minute when Victor Lindelöf turned into his own net, and Brighton doubled their lead ten minutes later as Maxim De Cuyper converted an assist from Georginio Rutter. Jack Hinshelwood then took over, scoring in the 30th minute with Diego Gómez supplying the assist before adding a second unassisted goal just a minute later to make it 4-0.
Villa's afternoon worsened further before the break when João Gomes was sent off in the 40th minute, leaving them to play the remainder of the half a man light and already four goals behind. There was no way back for the visitors, who managed just six shots and none on target across the match, underlining how comprehensively they were outplayed.
Hinshelwood scored twice inside a two-minute spell either side of the half-hour mark, capping the display with a rating of 8.9, the highest of any player on the pitch.
Brighton's dominance was laid bare by a 73% to 27% split in possession over their outclassed visitors.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Brighton 47%, the draw 26%, Aston Villa 27%. It finished Brighton 4–0 Aston Villa.
Level sides, Brighton's control of the ball swings it — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Brighton's control of the ball plus Aston Villa's hot finishing due to cool give Brighton the lean. The draw at 26% is what level sides usually produce.
Why Brighton in front?
Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1958 to 1987. Sides this close won 43.2% of 15,816 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.1%). Brighton hold 9 more possession points (59 to 50 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, home teams with this control edge won 47.9% of 5,175 games, vs 44.0% when styles were level. Aston Villa scored +0.73 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Visitors running this hot went on to win 29.1% of 1,453 games, vs 28.9% for visitors finishing normally.
Why only 47%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Brighton's column. Across 10,693 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why the draw at 26%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,855. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The cool-off factor takes 1.9 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 6 between them: Brighton 1 win, 1 draw, Aston Villa 4 wins. Most recently Aston Villa 1–0 Brighton, 6 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 28.1% of 5589 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. Aston Villa's last five: D-W-W-W-L — clearly the hotter side on recent results. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.7% of 2190 games when clearly hotter and 42.9% of 4003 when clearly colder. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
