Ten-man Atletico Madrid fight back to draw 2-2 with Villarreal
Atletico Madrid and Villarreal shared the points in a dramatic La Liga round two fixture at the Metropolitano Stadium, drawing 2-2 after a match swung by a red card and a stoppage-heavy finish. The result left Simeone's side third in the table on four points, with Inigo Perez's Villarreal seventh after two rounds.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The game was goalless at half-time before Marc Pubill broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, finishing off an assist from Giuliano Simeone. Villarreal responded quickly through Gerard Moreno, who converted a penalty in the 66th minute to level the score at 1-1.
Atletico's task grew harder in the 76th minute when Robin Le Normand was sent off, and Villarreal made the extra man count almost immediately as Georges Mikautadze scored from the spot two minutes later to put the visitors 2-1 ahead. But Atletico, down to ten men, found a leveller in the 85th minute when Giuliano Simeone converted a Álex Baena assist to make it 2-2, a scoreline that held to the final whistle.
Villarreal had the better of the underlying numbers despite playing with a full complement for most of the contest, generating far more expected goals than their hosts, while Atletico enjoyed more possession and a greater volume of shots overall.
Marc Pubill scored Atletico's opener and earned the highest rating on the pitch at 8.2, capping an impressive display before his side had to see out the final stretch a man down.
Villarreal's 3.14 expected goals figure, well clear of Atletico's 0.65, underlined how clinically the visitors created their best chances despite finishing level.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Atletico Madrid 52%, the draw 27%, Villarreal 21%. It finished Atletico Madrid 2–2 Villarreal.
Atletico Madrid's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Atletico Madrid are a shade stronger on our strength rating, and La Liga home advantage plus Villarreal's hot finishing due to cool on top give Atletico Madrid the lean. The draw at 27% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Atletico Madrid at 52%?
Atletico Madrid sit 56 points higher on our strength rating — 2003 to 1947. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge at home won 50.6% of 10,376 such games. La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.2%). La Liga homes won 46.6% of 6,091 games vs 44.9% across all 99,290 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. Villarreal scored +0.68 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Visitors running this hot went on to win 29.1% of 1,453 games, vs 28.9% for visitors finishing normally.
Why only 52%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Atletico Madrid's column. Across 10,693 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Villarreal win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 26.5%. These teams' recent games average 3.1 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,855. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The cool-off factor takes 1.9 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 6 between them: Atletico Madrid 3 wins, 2 draws, Villarreal 1 win. Most recently Villarreal 5–1 Atletico Madrid, 3 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 43.1% of 5051 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. Atletico Madrid on 3 days' rest, Villarreal on 7. Once class is accounted for, rest gaps stopped mattering — across 43,482 measured games no rest advantage repeated.
