Match report
Gueye double brings Villarreal their first league win
Villarreal finally have a league win, and they had to recover from a setback to earn it. Pape Gueye came off the bench to score twice, including the penalty that sealed a 3–1 victory at Málaga, with Alberto Moleiro also on target. Their first success at the sixth attempt ends four consecutive defeats across all competitions and lifts them to five points.

The response to Carlos Dotor’s opener mattered beyond the score. Before the game, Villarreal’s coach had described a team losing its organisation when things went wrong, and stressed the need for composure. The comeback gives his players something concrete to build on after a run that included defeat at Dortmund in the Champions League. The coach later praised the calm his players showed after conceding and insisted that this response must become a regular standard.
For Málaga, the wait for a first league victory stretches to six matches. After drawing their previous two home games, they had a lead to build on at La Rosaleda but could not protect it. They remain on three points, and have still not scored more than once in a league game this season: getting ahead has yet to bring the breakthrough their start needs.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Malaga 24%, the draw 26%, Villarreal 50%. It finished Malaga 1–3 Villarreal.
Villarreal's rating gap outweighs Malaga's home ground — Villarreal are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Villarreal the lean. The draw at 26% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Villarreal at 50%?
Villarreal sit 211 points higher on our strength rating — 1685 to 1896. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 52.0% of 6,094 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Malaga's column. Across 11,170 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 26–24–50.
Why only 50%?
La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.2%). La Liga homes won 46.6% of 6,137 games vs 44.9% across all 100,266 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 26%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.0%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,104. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Malaga are newly promoted — game 6 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. Malaga are missing 2 regular starters — Dani Lorenzo, Carlos Dotor — about 21% of their usual starting-XI weight. A body count alone told us nothing. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
